Roles in the Data Org & Career Ladder

Central Data Team:

Data Steward

This is a role that requires an understanding of Data Governance and Management.

Analytics Engineer

For me, this role is an amalgamation of a Data Analyst, Data Engineer, and Data Architect. Modern Data Stack has reduced and modified the work that these roles earlier used to fulfill. Analytics has shifted to pure business problem-solving now and they can’t keep generating reports and data dumps.

Manager: Central Data Team

Everyone is familiar with the role of the data product manager now. I believe that everyone is misguided on this front. We don’t need to create another PM role for problems with data. Instead, we need to empower Data leaders with product thinking and this will be solved. This is a role that requires some skills of an Engineering Manager, Product Manager, and Program Manager.

Analytics Teams

Business Analyst

This team will be highly business-thinking driven and focused on actionable analytical solutions. Far away from tech. Primarily takes the help of central data team for if stuck in anything tech or downstream data.

Product Analyst

This team will be highly product-thinking driven and focused on product/feature optimization. Work closely with tech with respect to any new feature implementation and work with the central data team with respect to upstream data and downstream data.

Fraud Analyst

This team will be highly fraud-thinking driven and focused on proactively identifying and limiting fraudulent behavior. Far away from tech. Primarily takes the help of central data team for if stuck in anything tech or downstream data.

Game Analyst

This team will be highly game-thinking driven and focused on product/feature optimization. Work closely with tech with respect to any new feature implementation and work with the central data team with respect to upstream data and downstream data. Data is a lot here and is messy.

Fraud Investigator

This team will be highly fraud-thinking driven and focused on proactively identifying and limiting fraudulent behavior via forensic analysis. Primarily works with fraud analytics team. Minimal data skills are required but high problem-solving skills are required.
